Holiday Loneliness

The holiday season is supposed to be full of joy and cheer, but when you find yourself celebrating alone, it might seem a little sad and lonely. Whether you’re an empty nester, a single mother or father, or someone grieving a recent loss, the holiday season can be tough when you’re alone.

Knowing a few helpful ways to combat seasonal holiday loneliness can help you feel better around the holidays. If your loneliness progresses to depression or thoughts of self-harm though, please seek immediate help . Remember that you are valuable, you are loved, and you are wanted.

Connection

No matter where you are or what stage of life you are in, there is always a way to establish meaningful connections with those around you. Though you may not want to go out, make a point to go out in public and interact with others every day. If you are able to, call friends and family on the phone and stay in contact that way. If you cannot, consider joining a club or a group where you can actively interact and connect with others.

Service

Lonely hearts are often healed while helping or serving others. During the holiday season, needs are great. Consider volunteering at a local shelter or using one of your skills to help others. If you know how to knit or sew, consider making blankets for young children born at a shelter. If you’re handy with tools, consider volunteering to build sets for a holiday play or crafting an item for a charity auction.

Self-Care

Remember to put yourself first this holiday season—and that includes taking care of your mental health. Practice self-compassion as you navigate this difficult time in your life. Give yourself the freedom you need to find pleasure and joy in your life the way it is now. Pick up a new hobby, treat yourself to a nice meal, spend time creating something wonderful for just you to enjoy. Taking time to care for your mind and body will help you cope with the difficulties of holiday loneliness.
