In society today, it’s widely accepted that if you are suffering from a physical health condition, you should visit a medical professional who specializes in the proper treatment for said condition. For example, if you are suffering from any sort of digestive problem, you should visit a gastroenterologist.
Unfortunately, it is not widely accepted in our society that if you are suffering from mental health conditions, then you should see a medical health professional. This is a serious issue, considering that one in every five adults suffers from mental health conditions in a given year.
Mental Health Misconceptions
There are multiple reasons that contribute to society’s dismissal of mental health conditions.
Some believe that people with mental conditions are “faking” in order to get attention, or that they are suffering from said condition because of a personal weakness. Others believe mental conditions are temporary and people can just “shake it off.”
The truth is that mental conditions have nothing to with a person’s character. These conditions develop due to environmental and biological factors and are quite real. No one would willingly choose to have a mental health condition, just as they wouldn’t wish for a physical one.
Mental conditions cannot be “shaken off.” They are serious conditions that alter the biological functioning of the human body and require proper medical treatment to help address the symptoms.
